confidentiality

Communication in therapy is confidential and protected by the HIPPA law. The law gives YOU the right to authorize the release of information about your treatment. A copy of the law is available at the office for you to read. Your records are only released when authorized in writing, with three exceptions. I am mandated to report information:

  1. When you might harm yourself or others
  2. When you are suspected of being a victim or perpetrator of abuse and/or neglect
  3. When the court has subpoenaed records.

Those clients who utilize insurance will sign a release as part of the intake process. Communication of a diagnosis to the insurance company is necessary to receive reimbursement. Without a release to your insurance company, you will need to pay for each session.

Communication with your primary care physician is important to your care. One of the forms you sign will allow us to release information to your MD.

If you are under 18, your parents have the right to some information about your treatment. During the initial session(s) we will develop a contract between you, your parent(s) and me which will clearly state what, when, where and how information about you will be shared. If your parent contacts me between sessions, you will be informed. Most insurance companies require periodic family sessions. They are scheduled every four to six sessions.
